Technical expertise aside, leading cardiologist Dr Edward Rowland believes the very best heart surgeons are those that also have empathy and a caring attitude to their patients during what can be a very anxious and distressing time. In a piece by the Daily Mail published on the 5th June 2018, cardiology peers gave their views on who they believe are the best heart rhythm surgeons are in Britain.

First on the list, Professor Richard Schilling is highly regarded in the cardiology community both for his pioneering research and treatment of atrial fibrillation but also for being a great patient champion.

‘He’s also made an immense academic contribution to the subject of arrhythmias as a key researcher,’ says another.

‘This matters to patients because it is a sign of someone keen to develop and refine treatments.’
